State-Based Oxygen Funding Overview

At the time of writing, each state and territory in Australia has its own programme to help people with home oxygen. The names and requirements for these programmes may be different, but they all tend to focus on stationary home oxygen equipment instead of portable oxygen concentrators.

Portable devices are not often subsidised for use in the community by adults. This means that most adults who need oxygen outside of the home pay for a portable concentrator on their own.

Here is a simple, high-level overview of how funding programmes work across the country.

QLD

MASS (Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme)

  • Provides funding for home oxygen equipment for eligible residents.
  • Does not fund portable oxygen concentrators for adults (only for some children under 16 and adults awaiting heart–lung transplant).

NSW

EnableNSW

  • Supports eligible patients with home oxygen (stationary concentrators and cylinders).
  • Portable oxygen concentrators are typically not subsidised and are usually privately purchased.

VIC

SWEP (State-Wide Equipment Program)

  • Provides assistance with home oxygen equipment based on clinical need.
  • Portable concentrators for community mobility generally fall outside funded items.

SA

SA Health Domiciliary Oxygen Program

  • Offers home oxygen therapy for eligible patients.
  • Portable devices for community use are not routinely funded.

WA

WA Oxygen Services / Respiratory Health Programs

  • Supports specialist-approved home oxygen therapy.
  • Portable concentrators are usually privately funded unless under rare exceptional circumstances.

TAS

TasEquip

  • Assists with essential home oxygen equipment for eligible residents.
  • Portable oxygen support for daily mobility is not commonly subsidised.

NT

NT Oxygen Services

  • Supplies home oxygen equipment based on clinical assessment.
  • Portable oxygen concentrators are usually patient-funded.

ACT

ACT Equipment Scheme

  • Provides basic home aids, including stationary oxygen concentrators.
  • Portable oxygen concentrators are not routinely subsidised.

Private Purchase of Portable Oxygen Concentrators

Since most adults don't get assistance paying for portable concentrators, many people choose to buy one on their own to help them move around, be independent, and do everyday things outside the home.

Why many patients choose to buy independently

Portable concentrators can offer:

  • Greater independence in community settings
  • A lightweight, easy replacement for oxygen cylinders
  • Easier travel and movement
  • Lightweight, flexible oxygen flow delivery
  • No ongoing cylinder refill costs

Kingon Australia supplies a range of portable, transportable and home stationary concentrators designed to suit different therapy needs and lifestyles.

  • Just wanted to say a big thanks. The unit has arrived this morning and its a brilliant bit of kit and so easy for mum at 85 to manage. Excellent service

  • I learned that the Kingon is the lightest weight portable oxygen concentrator approved by both the FDA and FCC. This meant that I could use it on an airplane. Prior to getting this unit I was instrumental to take at least SIX bottles of oxygen with me to ensure I didn’t run out. In other words, I would constantly have to walk back to our vehicle and switch tanks. Instead I was able to take my Kingon, power cords, and extra battery to meet my needs. Because you are able to use the Kingon even as it charges I kept mine plugged into the cigarette lighter of our vehicle e route to the festivities. This meant that my unit was fully charged when we arrived at the venue. I was receiving such a great supply of oxygen that I didn’t rush to reconnect to my home unit as I sat visiting with my family. Suddenly my son spoke up saying he thought that my colouring was better and I was breathing easier on my portable unit than when I used the big concentrator. The oxygen from my new Kingon seem more pure and I found that I didn’t feel as short of breath. If you depend on a machine like I do you understand just what a blessing this is! I no longer have to worry about losing my independence because the Kingon will allow me to remain active as well as independent. If you are considering obtaining a portable device be sure to check this one out!

A Simple Way to Return or Recycle a Kingon Oxygen Concentrator

We know that people often buy oxygen concentrators when they are going through critical health events, and things can change. Our Buy-Back Programme is a respectful and easy way to return a Kingon device that is no longer required.

  • 1. Send the device for evaluation

Our service team will assess the concentrator’s condition, total run time and any returned accessories. We strongly suggest you take a photo of the package contents for transit.

  • 2. Receive an offer

Based on the evaluation, we provide a fair buy-back amount. This is determined by the device’s condition, whether it was used by a smoker or non-smoker, total hours of operation, and any refurbishment required.

  • 3. Decide how you'd like to proceed

If you accept the offer, we complete the buy-back and handle the rest.
If you choose not to proceed, a standard assessment fee of $99+GST applies before the device is returned. If unpaid, we reserve the right to dispose of the goods.
